Multiple Deities Within The Old Testament?

Ehehehe come and see oh mortals. From the book Diaries of Speculation.

 Page 133.

I originally wrote this while I was serving an LDS mission. I wrote It for my Zone Leader to give to some one. A bit has been added sents then. Note that at the time I post this I am not a member of the LDS sect. Note also that my beliefs have changed much sents writing this years ago. And I hope they will continue to change. The reason I post this is because it shows that there are a plurality of Deities in the Old Testament. Please let me know your thoughts.

A Plurality Of Gods In The Old Testament

“traduttore, traditore”

The translator is the traitor.
Latin proverb

Many are surprised or even angered to find that the Holy Bible contains references to multiple gods. They off times bring up scriptures such as Deut 4/35 to contradic it.

Quote

Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the Lord he is God; there is none else beside him.

End quote

Also see 1 kings 8/60
Isaiah 45/5-6
Isaiah 46/9
Joel 2/27

I shall first address this repeating statement,
THERE IS NONE ELSE BESIDE ME

Because we are not use to the ancient way of speaking we misunderstand this phrase. How will I prove it?
by the Holy Bible. Where Babylon speaks of themselves.

Isaiah 47/8-9

Quote

Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and NONE ELSE BESIDE ME; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:

For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and NONE ELSE BESIDE ME.

End quote

Note how Babylon uses this same phrase that God uses. Why would they uses this phrase seeing that there were many other nations. Did they truly believe they were the only nation?

The answer to this question is no.
For the meaning of this phrase is comparable to our modern phrase of being number one. Like saying I'm number one, I'm the best there is no one better then me.

Next CONTRADICTING SCRIPTURES.
The Holy Bible speaks of multiple Gods.

1 Corinthians 8/5-6

Quote

For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)

But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

End quote

This is saying that there are lots of Gods but we only worship one.

This is shown all throughout the Old Testament.
Exodus 20/3

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Many believe that this scripture is speaking of idol worship If this is the case then why is idol worship it's own commandment?

Exodus 20/4/5

Quote

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

End quote

Exodus 15/11

Quote

Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

End quote

Exodus 22/28

Quote

Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people.

End quote

Note here God is saying to respect other Gods.

There are many that argue this scripture is speaking of judges. I feel that this reasoning is flawed for if this be the case then when ever it speak of God or God's in the bible we can say its not speaking of God but judges. We could take God out of the bible with such logic. If you read the Hebrew the word is Gods and I believe the Hebrew.

See also Psalms 136/2

GODS MALES AND FEMALES

Genesis 1/27
Quote

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

End quote

Because of this scripture some may say that God is a hermaphrodite. But this can not be the case for we are create in his image wherefore if his image is that of a hermaphrodite we would all be hermaphrodites.

The Hebrew word for God is אֱ¦לֹ¦הִים /Elohim. IM is like a apostrophe S it makes things plural. The first part of Elohim, spelt in Hebrew Aleph Lamed Hey/ Eloh is a feminine noun, the last part Yod Mem/ Im is masculine together they are Elohim which means Gods Male's and female's.

So we are made in the image of the gods who are a father and a mother.

The words translated as The Lord God as is shown in Genesis 2, in Hebrew is Yahweh Elohim a more correct translation would be Jehovah of the Gods.

LASTLY
There is a interesting phrase in the story where the serpent beguiled Eve.

Genesis 3/4-5
Quote

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil

End quote

Given that the serpent was only speaking to Eve the phrase ye shall be as Gods makes no sents. If he said ye shall be as God it would, or if the serpent was talking to Adam and Eve, gods would make sents, but he wasn't. A more correct translation would be

Ye shall be as THE GODS knowing good and evil.

Keep in mind this was just using the Holy Bible. There are many archeologist and scholars finding evidences that the ancient Hebrews did believe in multiple
deities. Joseph Smith like wise made many remarks upon this subject. which I shall address in another post.

Thanks so much for those that took the time to read this article.

Now with all things believe not what I say but do as the The Holy Bible says
James 1/5

Quote

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

End quote

May our Great God and Father bless all of you.
